Dedicated New York Attorneys

Experienced Real Estate Tax Appeal Attorneys in New York City

Throughout New York City, the law firm of Brandt, Steinberg & Lewis LLP has represented properties of every size and description for nearly 80 years. Our practice is generally limited to real estate tax assessment matters, both commercial and residential. We also work with property owners and net tenants in eminent domain proceedings as well as representing applicants for real estate tax exemptions and abatements.

The firm was opened during the Great Depression by our founder Peter Brandt. Our current team of attorneys has carried on his tradition of excellence into the 21st century. Our representation typically includes dealing with administrative review boards, assessors, municipal attorneys and, if necessary, litigation. Our fees are typically contingency based at a mutually agreed-upon percentage.

New York Tax Certiorari & Condemnation Attorneys Since 1932

Our firm, which has existed for nearly eight decades, currently consists of six attorneys with extensive experience.

Hubert J. Brandt, our founding partner, is a past President of the Real Estate Tax Review Bar Association and was a member of the New York State Temporary Commission on Real Property Tax for the entirety of its existence. He is a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation, the Committee of Property Taxation of the Real Estate Board of New York and various other bar association assessment law committees.

Partners Richard A. Steinberg and Willa I. Lewis started their legal careers as members of the Tax Certiorari Division of the New York City Law Department. Ms. Lewis was a Deputy Division Chief of that Department.

Mr. Steinberg started with the firm in 1977 and has since served as President of the Real Estate Tax Review Bar Association as well as Chair of the Committee on Condemnation and Tax Certiorari of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. Mr. Steinberg has argued matters before the New York State Court of Appeals, including our recent victory resulting in a real estate tax exemption for an adult home in the City of Middletown New York.

Ms. Lewis started with the firm in 1986 and has since served as President of the Real Estate Tax Review Bar Association and she is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Real Estate Tax Review Bar Association. Ms. Lewis is also the President of VASCA. VASCA is a not-for-profit agency providing grants to support summer respites for low-income elderly residents of New York City.

Peter E. Blond became a partner on January 1, 2011. Mr. Blond originally started with the firm in 1997 and returned in 2008 after spending five years with Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein P.C. on Long Island. During his time with that firm, Mr. Blond was able to expand his knowledge and experience with Nassau and Suffolk counties. Mr. Blond has written several articles and has lectured extensively on real property tax matters.

Kathryn Weg Brandt started with the firm in 1988. She concentrates her practice on the firm's litigation matters including, but not limited to, appearances before the Appellate Division of the State of New York.

Michaelle Francois started with the firm in 2003. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Francois was a pension analyst for Price Waterhouse. She is an active member of the Big Brother Big Sister program of Greater New York.

In addition, Mr. Patrick Burke - while not an attorney - is an invaluable asset to our office through many years of appraisal experience; as an assessor for the City of New York as well as Director of the Appraisal Division of the New York City Tax Commission.
